Privacy

We collect what it takes to post you a book or send you an email you asked for, and to learn how visitors find the book. Analytics and advertising cookies are only used if you accept them. We never sell your data.

Who is responsible

When you order a book

The order form asks for your name, delivery address, phone number and email address. We use them to take payment, have your copy printed and posted, send you a receipt and a tracking link, and answer you if something goes wrong. The legal basis is the contract you enter into when you order. The carrier requires the phone number for delivery.

Payment is handled by Stripe on Stripe’s own page. Your card or bank details go to Stripe directly. We never see or store them.

When you sign up for news

The sign-up form asks for your email address only. We use it to send a welcome mail and word of new casebooks, on the basis of your consent. If you tick “Tell me when the next casebook is out” when you order, we add the email address from your order to the same list, but don’t send a welcome mail. Every mail has an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to remove you at hi@amurderinpieces.com.

Who else handles your data

These companies act on our instructions and only for the purposes above. Some of them are based in the United States. Where your data leaves the European Economic Area it is protected by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or by standard contractual clauses. We do not sell your data or share it with anyone else, unless the law obliges us to.

Cookies and tracking

This website loads Google Tag Manager, which we use to run analytics and advertising measurement. On your first visit we ask whether you accept those cookies. Until you do, they are not set, and Google only receives anonymous signals without cookies. The legal basis is your consent, which you can change at any time with the “Cookies” link at the bottom of every page. Your choice is remembered in your own browser.

We also use Microsoft Clarity to see how the pages are used: where people click, how far they scroll, and where something seems not to work. Clarity records mouse movements, clicks and scrolling, and hides the text you type into forms. Until you accept cookies, it sets none and treats every page you open as a separate, unconnected visit. If you accept, it sets cookies that link your page views into one visit for up to a year. Microsoft keeps the recordings for 30 days and the click and scroll figures for 13 months.

When you pay, you leave for Stripe’s checkout page, where Stripe uses cookies it needs to process the payment and prevent fraud.

While you are on Stripe’s page, the order form keeps your delivery details in your own browser tab, so they are still filled in if you come back without paying. They never leave your device this way, and they are deleted as soon as you return or your order goes through, or when you close the tab.

How long we keep it

Order and payment records are kept for as long as tax law requires, which in the Netherlands is seven years. Your email address stays on the mailing list until you unsubscribe. Emails you send us are deleted once the matter is settled and no longer needed.

Your rights

You may ask to see the data we hold on you, have it corrected or deleted, have its use restricted, receive a copy of it, or object to its use. You can withdraw consent for the mailing list at any time. Write to hi@amurderinpieces.com and we will answer within a month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you may complain to your national data protection authority. In the Netherlands that is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
